Exploring Identity and Accessibility Through Found Sounds Workshop Series

The Youth Musician Commission (YMC) of The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall presents their first-ever workshop series. This project is part of a series of Community Change Projects designed to empower youth with and without a disability to realize their role as active citizens and inform conversations on topics that impact their lives. Designed for youth by youth, the workshop series encourages young musicians to explore the process of music-making while creating a space to think critically about identity and actualize their ideas into music. These projects are part of the Ontario Youth United campaign, which is being funded in part by Heritage Canada and Community Living Ontario as part of its provincial youth engagement initiative Re:Action4Inclusion.

All participants are welcome to join post-workshop discussions, skill-sharing, and activities on our workshop channel on Discord.

Recommended for high school-aged students, but all ages are welcome to attend this free music workshop series.

Expressing Authenticity, Change, and Identity Through Found Sound
April 12th, 2:00-3:30 p.m.
 This workshop facilitated by the YMC and Cathy Nosaty will focus on how music influences society and our emotions, what constitutes music, and how everyday objects can become instruments. We will also look at how the sounds around us can represent us and our lives as Canadians.

Learn How to Compose Your Found Sound Using Soundtrap
April 15th, 2:00-3:30 p.m.
 Guided by the YMC and Cathy Nosaty, we will learn how to use Soundtrap to record sounds from our environment to make music representing how you live, who you are, and how you hear. Reflect on how the sounds around you and what you hear every day inform your identity, and then use the sounds to create a song for change and empowerment.
